Surfactants (surfactants   ), also known as surfactants, are chemical compounds used in a variety of industries, such as detergents, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. What are amphoteric surfactants?

  •   In   acidic environments,  they act as   cationic surfactants  .

  • In an alkaline environment  , they behave like anionic   surfactants     .

  • At    neutral pH,  it has   a diionic structure   (has positive and negative charges).

Chemical composition

Amphoteric surfactants are usually made up of three parts:

  1. Hydrophobic groups    , such as alkyl chains.

  2. Cationic (positively charged ) groups ,    such as amines or ammonium.

  3. Anionic (negative) groups,    such as carboxylates or sulfones.

Common types of amphoteric surfactants are:

  • Betaines    (such as    cocamidopropyl betaine – CAPB   )

  • Amide    oxides (e.g.,    lauramine   ) oxide

  • Sarcosinates    (e.g.,    sodium   ) lauryl sarcosinate

  • Glycinates    (as    sodium   ) cocoglycinate


Properties of amphoteric surfactants

  1. High compatibility with skin and hair: much     less irritating than anionic surfactants.

  2. Efficiency depends on pH:    they behave differently in acidic, alkaline, and neutral environments.

  3. Excellent foaming properties: it    forms a good foam even in hard water.

  4. Thermal and chemical stability:    Stable at high temperatures and different pH values.

  5. Synergistic effect with other surfactants:    Can be combined with anionic, cationic and non-ionic surfactants.


Use of amphoteric surfactants

1. Beauty & Health Products

  • Shampoo & Conditioner:  Cocamidopropyl Betaine     (CAPB) acts as a mild foaming surfactant .

  • Face and body cleansers:    Because they are gentle, they reduce skin irritation.

  • Products for children:    for example, shampoo “without tears”.

2. Production of detergents

  • Dishwashing Detergent: Increases    foaming and reduces hand skin irritation.

  • Special detergent for delicate fabrics:    thanks to its high compatibility with fibres.

3. Pharmaceutical and Medical Industry

  • Medicines for external use:    as an emulsifier and stabilizer.

  • Contact lens solutions:    for compatibility with the eyes.

4. Agricultural industry

  • Increases the absorption of pesticides and fertilizers: acts    as a wetting and distributing agent.

5. Oil & Gas Industry

  • Oil drilling:    as a foaming agent and   surfactant.


Advantages of amphoteric surfactants

Problems and shortcomings

  • The production    cost is higher than that of conventional anionic surfactants.

  • The chemical composition is more complex.

  • High concentrations should be limited    because of the possible reduction in formulation stability.
