What is AWWA B453?

1.    Physical structure and chemical composition

  • PAHs must be made from carbon-based materials such as charcoal, wood or coconut shells.

  • There must be no impurities that impair the health or function of the filter system.

2.    High absorption rate (iodine number)

  • The iodine count as an indicator of active intake should be within certain limits (usually above 600 mg/g).

3.    Granule

  • The particle size distribution must    ensure sufficient dispersion in the system and prevent clogging of the filter.

  • More than 95% of the weight should fit through a No. 100 (150 micron) sieve.

4.    Ash and moisture

  • The ash content should not exceed 15%.

  • The humidity should not exceed the permissible limit (usually less than 8%).

5.    pH of the aqueous solution

  • The pH of the carbon solution should be between 6 and 10 to ensure chemical compatibility with other materials.
